l, Emerson andNorton—may well be added a fourth,Phillips Brooks. I Phillips Brooks was minister of a)church in Philadelphia at the tmie ofthe assassination. On Sunday, Aprii23 1865, the body of the slain Presidentlay in state in Philadelphia, on its wayto its final resting place in Springfield,111 Mr. Brooks had been preaching aseries of sermons on a passage takenfrom the eighth chapter of the Gospelof St. John, and had delivered five ofthis series. But the occasion of thelying in state of the body of the greatleader was so overwhelming that Mr.Brooks broke the continuity of the seriesand delivered a most powerful andtouching address on Abraham Lincoln, taking his text from the Seventy-eighthPsalm, verses 71, 72 and 73. This address, delivered under suchcircumstances by that youthful preacherwho was destined to become himself soeminent, is inspiring reading today. Sothe name of Phillips Brooks may wellbo added to the list given in your fineeditorial. Z. W. COOMBS, Worcester, Feb. 13.
