madefrom the original photograph isin the files of the IllinoisHistorical society in Spring-field, m. Original in Springfield In Springfield, Miss MargaretFlint, assistant Illinois statehistorian, said the print, whichwas presented to the society in1940, was in collections ownedby the families of John Nicolay-nd John Hay, Lincolns secre-taries. The collections wer-presented to the society byMrs. Alice Hay Wadsworth,daughter of Hay. Miss Flint said record^ showthat two photgTi-phs of Lincolnin his coffin were made byGuj-ney & Sons, New Yorkphotographers. But upon theorder of Secretary of WarEdwin A. Stanton, who fearedthe photographs would disturbMrs. Lincoln, both photographicplates and the single printmade from the larger one weredestroyed,-and Stanton retainedthe only print made from theother plate. Miss Flint said the print atSpringfield is accompanied by aletter written by Stantons son,Louis, in 18C7 when he gave theprint to Nicolay after finding itin his lat^ fathers papers.

A copy of only known photograph of President Lincolnon display in New York and presented to Rockford college (111.)yesterday. Original picture was taken by Gurney & Son, NewYork photographer, April 24, 1865, when Lincoln was lying instate in New York City, (ap wirepnotoi Hay were thena biography of Nicolay andworking onLincoln. Many Copies Made Miss Flint said many copieshave been made of the photo-graph in the Illinois Historicalsociety archives and are avail-able at any time. The photograph displayedhere was said to have beenbrought to the attention of Mrs.Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt,daughter of Frederick HillMeserve, a Lincoln authority,in the 19503. When J^rs. Kunhardtsdaughter married GeorgeLodge, son of Henry CabotLodge, American ambassadorto South Viet Nam, she gavethe photo to the family ^ be-cause, by coincidence, in thepictwe was Charles HenryDavis, the great-great-grand-father of George Lodge. The photo was presented toRockford college by John DavisLodge, the ambassadorsbr
