nd, and, with the aid of my assistant,soon made him stand quietly to have the harness put uponhim, though he resisted the utmost of extreme treatmentbefore submitting. Another great and frequent cause of embarrassment tome was, after subjecting a horse to treatment before aclass, it was supposed that if the system was good foranything, he must perform equally well out of doors. Asfrequently explained, a horse must be subjected to treat-ment out of doors in order to insure his working there. Ifsubjected to treatment in a building only, when taken intothe streets where he has been in the habit of resisting, hewould be liable to show as much fear and resistance asthough not subjected to treatment at all. To let the horseresist under such circumstances would be fatal to mysuccess. Still this proof was in most cases demanded, andhad to be given. I have frequently referred to this difficulty in differentparts of the work, particularly in the last chapter—Familiar 522 PBESO)^AL EXPEEIENCE.
