Though, beyond all doubt, a sudden influx ofthat kind must be injurious; yet it will probably be far less sothan a similar event in the history of Spain and Portugal provedto be, when America was first discovered. The commerce of theworld, and the arts of life now require and will absorb a muchlarger amount of gold, without materially disturbing the conditionof communities, than then ; and the habits of the people of theUnited States are much better calculated to bear the effects ofsuch a change, than were those of the proud, indolent and luxuri-ous conquerors of Peru, Brazil and Mexico. On the whole, there-fore, it may reasonably be expected that the evils usually attendantupon wealth acquired suddenly and without proportionate labor*may, in this case, be either neutralized by the peculiarities of ournational habits, or overbalanced by the undoubted beuefits atten-dant on the acquisition of this great western outlet tor our com-merce and our enterprize.
