ns and pilasters, the frieze under the cornice ofthe side porticoes, the lunette over the entrance-door, foursculptured panels in the fagade, and the vases, chimaeras, andother decorative objects of the facade3. The same artist wassubsequently authorised to execute the sculpture of the pediment—representing the nine Muses—from a design supplied by MrEastlake4; and the four lions at the foot of the staircasesleading to the north and south entrances of the colonnade5. 1 (This Report, dated 24 May, was confirmed 31 May, 1837.) 2 (This is the term used in the Report of the Syndicate, dated 11 October, 1837,in which they recommended the adoption of Messrs Hicks tender.) :( (This was sanctioned by the Senate 19 April, 1837. The total cost was ^3,180.) 4 (Grace, 15 November, confirming a Report of the Syndicate dated 1 November,1837. Mr Easevis own design for the sculpture (fig. 2) seems to have been intendedto commemorate Viscount Fitzwilliam.) 5 (Minute of the Syndicate, 7 June, 1839.)
