ted into simple Jdtra. The gumphasreferred to above formerly gave shelter to manyrecluses. With the spread of the influence ofVairata kings Cyamarka came to be knownamong the Jiindns as Camivrksa and the storyof the concealment of the bows and arrows bythe Pandavas in the caves probably becamecurrent at this time. We learn from theMaliabharata that the live Pandavas kept theirbows and arrows in the holes of trees and not inthe caves of any hill. Besides, the Camivrksamentioned in the Maliabharata was in the king-dom of Virata. Virata or Matsya is identicalwith modern Jaypur in Ixajputana. We havediscussed this matter exhaustively elsewhere.■••■The village Ivnlilmna lies to the south of thisCamivrksa. The river Kufjabhadra, which flowsnear by, gets water all the year lound and fallsinto the Sona. At the foot of the hill is amonastery of a Babaji where the Bhagavata andother religious books are worshiiDped. * Sec IiitiMiluctiou—On VairaUi Bbujaiigas, ^ Ul o c < < cq <

:j KUTINO OR KOTILINGA. JvUTiNG or Kotiliijga is a very ancient andromantic place. It is situated at a distance ofabout thirty-two miles from Iiaripada, beingsurrounded on all sides by hills. Xo Hinfluinhabitants now live in this lonely place. The ruins of many ancient temples and severalCiva-Liijgas are found in various spots. It issaid that the name Koti-Liijo-a (of which Kutiijgis a contraction) originated from the circumstanceof a countless niunber of Civa-Liijgas having beenfound here. On three sides of the village flowsthe river Deva-nadi, while on the fourth is a fortnear which the rivers Sona and Deva-nadi meet.We are sure excavations here will yield results ofgreat archjpological interest. At a distance offour miles to the west of this place there is ahill with a crescent-shaped top. People call itPrthvi-Maiiils:ini. A little to the west lie thevast ruins of Pathuriagada adjoining an extensiveforest called Bada-Ivaman. This forest was atone time thickty populated. Kotiliijga o
