reservoir (kunda) be-low the Pitha. The overflowing water of thiskundu forms a river known as the Gangaharawhich flows by the side of Dhudhua and hasbecome united with the Bura-Balang. The Pithafrom which the water-fall issues a second time,to form the river appears to be the Yoni-Pitha orGauri-Patta of some Linga. With the help ofsome local Santals we had the flow of waterstopped, and the water and sand in the Pithataken out, when it was seen that a Svayambhu-Linga still exists in the Pitha. The mysteriousappearance of a Civa Linga from the bottom ofthe cavity from which the water-fall runs carriedus back to the age of mythological heroes of India,and curiously enough we found recorded in awork called Ganga-Varuni J^jahatmya, an accountof this Linga of which even tradition bore noevidence. In that book it is related that thefive Pandavas with Kunti, their m( ther, came ona pilgrimage to this place. So devout was Kuntithat she never would drink drop of water before 3 m oo-Jo ^.o <

Bhima resolved to provide againstthi^j and underwent certain austerities to pro-pitiate Mahadeva. The latter, who, was pleasedwith Bhimas devotion, appeared before him andsaici,—Bhima, the Ganges for whose sake youare doing penance (tapasya) is in my matted hair(jata) and I shall dishevel it and let loose thestream for your sake. Immediately Gangaappeared and flowed from the matted hair ofCiva and the water of the Ganges thus obtainedflowed by Prachi-Tirtha as a river. Kuntiworshipped Civa with the Ganges-water andconsidered herself blessed. The Civa-Linga whichBhima had worshipped still exists within thePithi. From tho head of that Civa-Linga Ganga-hara springs and, flowing continually, dischargesitself into the Rohini-Kunda at the foot of thePitha. It is the belief of the people that onewho, after bathing in this Rohini-Ku
