Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The library dates to the 2nd cent. A.D. and was built by the Roman emperor Hadrian after whom it was named. In the 3rd cent. A.D. the library was destroyed by the Heruli and was never rebuilt. In the 5th century A.D. the Early Christian Church of Megali Panagia (Virgin Mary) was built in the courtyard of the Library. Its ruins can be seen in the centre of the image. Near the lower left edge of the frame were located the bookshelves with the papyri of the library.
