of head,hind-neck, back, scapulars, and wings, dark ash-grey withpaler margins ; primaries, dull brown; lateral upper tail-coverts, white ; central ones, greyish-brown ; tail, chieflygreyish-brown, barred slightly near the end with darkergreyish-brown and white ; rest of head and throat, lightgreyish-white; front of neck and upper breast, ash-grey,washed with brown markings ; lower breast, abdomen, andunder tail-coverts, whitish. hnmature, male and female.—The sexes are practicallysimilar in plumage (for minor details of difference in theplumages of the sexes, vide Irish Naturalist, vol. ix, p. 189).Top of head streaked with black and dark buff; hind-neck,mouse-colour; feathers of back, scapulars, and wings,blackish, edged with buff; primaries, brownish; throat,front and sides of neck, and breast, dull buff; abdomen andunder tail-coverts, white ; tail, chiefly greyish-brown, edgedwith brownish-black and buff; chin, whitish. The Buff-breasted Sandpiper is an American species, ofvery rare occurrence in Britain. Like many other Trans-atlantic wanderers, it has been secured most often on theeast sides of England and Ireland, and chiefly in autumn.The first British specimen appears to be one taken atMelbourne, near Cambridge, in 1826. Subsequently thisspecies has been secured in Norfolk,^ Sussex, Cornwall,the Scilly Isles, Lundy Isle, and Cumberland. A specimenis said to have been taken at Formby, in Lancashire, inMay, 1829. A
