g the foreigncommerce of the Union from the face of the deep.On land the theatre of the Civil War was comprisedwithin an area bounded on the north by a line fol-lowing closely the courses of the Missouri, Ohio, andPotomac rivers; on the east and south by the coastsof the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico; and on the westby the frontiers of Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri.Antietam and Gettysburg took place a short dis-tance north of the Potomac; there were inconsider-able operations in New Mexico, and brief raids intoKansas and Ohio. Otherwise the work of the sol-diers lay within the limits described. Studying the terrain thus bounded—perhaps onemillion square miles, to and fro on which movedarmies—we find a region widely diversified. TheAppalachians, parallel ranges running from north-east to southwest, and rising in their higher summitsfar towards the snow-line, divide the region betweenthe coast and the Mississippi into two nearly equalportions.
