h the inscriptions there are found long bands ofpictures (reliefs) cut into the walls, illustrating the story.There are found also many full statues, large and small. Muchof the early sculpture was lifelike; and even the unnaturalcolossal statues, such as the Sphinxes, have a gloomy grandeurin keeping with the melancholy desert that stretches aboutthem. Later sculpture has less character and less finish. The painting lasted in the closed rock tombs with perfectfreshness, but it fades quickly upon exposure to the air.
