farther east, in the neighbourhood of Heme .Bay and Peculver, that the greatest number of Palaeolithic imple-ments have been discovered within the basin of the Thames. Thefirst discoveries in that locality were made in the autumn of 1860by Mr. Thomas Leech,* who had studied in the School of Mines,in Jermyn Street, and who, while searching for fossil remains atthe base of the cliff between Heme Bay and Reculver, discovereda flint implement which he at once recognized as analogous inform to some of those from the River Drift of the valley of theSomme. Continuing his search, he found six implements in all,which he has placed in the Museum of Economic Geology, inJermyn Street. (chap, xxur. siderable interest, as having been formed from a Lower Tertiaryflint pebble, and not from a flint derived directly from the chalk.

F g. -157.- Reoulver. \ The rounded end of the pebl le, which forms the butt of theinstrument, is admirably adapted for being held in the hand. On being inf rmed of the discovery, Mr. Prestwich and Iat once visited the locality. I have also been there on several RECULVER. 535 subsequent occasions. The implements at this place have not beenfound in their original matrix, but exposed upon the seashore atthe base of the cliff, between Heme Bay and Reculver, and for themost part at a short distance from the Bishopstone Coast-guardStation. In all, there cannot have been much fewer than a hundreddiscovered. I have myself found at various times eight specimens.Mr. Prestwich,* Mr. James Wyatt, Mr. Whitaker, and others,have also found some. The greatest number, however, have eitherbeen found by, or have passed into the hands of, Mr. John Brent,F.
