and a rude engraving of it illustrates a letter on theantiquities of London, by Mr. Bagford, dated in 1715, and printedin Hearnes edition of Lelands Collectanea.* From his accountit would seem to have been found, with a skeleton of an elephant,in the presence of Mr. Conyers. A full-sized engraving of this implement illustrated my firstnotice of these discoveries in the Amhceofogia,t and is repro-duced on the following page, as Fig. 451. As will be seen, it isremarkably similar in form to that from S niton Downham,Fig. 433, though rather larger in size. Though Quaternarygravels extend beneath a considerable part of London, no otherdiscoveries of implements have been made in them within theprecincts of the town itself. H.Gaviller in gravel dug at Hackney Down, to the north-east ofLondon, and not far from Shacklewell. It is of ochreous flint,slightly rolled, and in form remarkably like that from Bourne-mouth, Fig. 476. Though theexact place whence it came isunknown, yet there can be nodoubt of its really and trulybelonging to the HackneyDown gravels, which may beregarded as identical in ageand character with those ofShacklewell, so well known togeologists, and which havebeen described by Mr. Prest-wich.* The surface of theground at Hackney Downf is70 feet above the Ordnancedatum, and in 1866*a shaft wassunk there, through gravel and Sand, to a depth of 22 feet.
