LEFT WING OK THE NUNNERY OF CHICHEN-ITZA. Chichen-Itza. 341 that in the Nunnery ; this (jortico gives access to a gallery whichoccupies the whole width of the building. A large room, whichmust have been the sanctuary, is entered by the only openingout of the gallery, while two pillars with square capitals supporteda double corbel vault. Here the stairway was wider, and oneach side, forming a balustrade, is a gigantic plumed serpent,whose head and protruding tongue run down the balustrade. Allthese columns, pillars, and wooden lintels, are covered withsculptures and bas-reliefs, the impressions of which kept us closelyat work for several days. As in Mexico, Palenque, and Tula, there were no doorsproperly so called at Chichen, and no traces of hinges are found ;but a bamboo or wickerwork screen was suspended across theentrance, and secured at night with a bar.
