ternal oblique muscle, and that, by thus dragging these fibers along with them intheir descent, a series of inverted loops are formed by the gradual displacement andelongation of their intermediate and more movable portion.* The cremaster branch of the epigastric artery furnishes the blood-supply to themuscle, and the principal division of the external spermatic nerve is distributed toits fibers. This muscle is generally wanting in the female, yet the lower fibers ofthe internal oblique muscle are, in some instances, loosely distributed over the roundligament of the uterus, where it lies in the lower part of the inguinal canal. Clo-quet observed that oftentimes an oblique inguinal hernia is formed in the female. The anterior surface of the hernial sac derives a partial investment from the inferiorfibers of the internal oblique, which are displaced and dragged downward by the sac, * Vide Recherches anatomiques sur les Hernies de IAbdomen, par Jules Cloquet, 4to, Paris, 1817, p. 15. >
Text Appearing After Image:
INGUINAL HERNIA. ANATOMY OF THE PARTS INVOLVED. 21 as the hernia is gradually protruded through the inguinal canal, very closely imitat-ing the mode of formation of the cremaster muscle by the descent of the testis inthe male. Some individuals are possessed of a considerable voluntary power overthe contractions of the cremaster muscle, and are enabled to retract the testes as highas the external abdominal ring, and in some instances even to withdraw them intothe lower part of the inguinal canal. The Transvejsalis Muscle.—Y\iQ transversalis muscle, in its lower portion, arisesfrom the outer third of Pouparts ligament and the crest of the ileum, and is insertedinto the linea alba. The lower fibers curve downward, and are inserted, togetherwith those of the internal oblique muscle, into the crest of the os pubis and pectinealline, forming the conjoined tendon already described. The triangular ligament is aband of tendinous fibers, which is continued from Pouparts ligament at its attach
