orticultural tests. The land andnearly all of the labor at these branch stations were furnished to thestation without charge. The branch stations were, however, discon-tinued after having been in operation two or three years, as they didnot receive sufficient financial support to make them successful. Thesebranch stations were followed in 1893 by three substations, organizedin accordance with an act of the State legislature and supported partlyby the State appropriation and partly from the national fund. Twoof these stations were discontinued in 1895, and now the substation atBeeville is supported entirely by a State appropriation of $2,500 peryear. This substation is located in the southern part of the State inthe semiarid region and is devoted mainly to testing the adaptability ofvegetables and field crops to local conditions, and various culturalexperiments with and without irrigation are carried on. TEXAS. 415 of the irrigation water supply of that region is an important feature ofthe work undertaken. In 1899 the State legislature appropriated831,000 for the erection of an agricultural and horticultural buildingat the central station, in which the general offices and laboratories willbe located. Professor Gulley was succeeded in the directorship in 1890 by Prof.G. TV. Curtis, who served until 1893. The present incumbent hasheld the office since that time. ORGANIZATION. The station is governed by the board of directors of the college,consisting of eight members, appointed by the governor and holdingoffice for six years. The board distributes the funds of the stationamong the different divisions at the beginning of each fiscal year.Meetings are held quarterly, if necessary, but usually less often.Members of the board receive no compensation from station funds.
