reater. The principal crops grown in theState are hay, wheat, oats, potatoes, and barley. Fruit growing hasbecome an important industry. Numerous sheep, cattle, milch cows,horses, and swine are produced. Agriculture has been practiced inthe State in a regular way about forty years. Lumbering is a verylarge interest and manufacturing is developing rapidly. Washingtonwas made a separate Territory in 1853 and a State in 1889. The college with which the station is connected was established in1891 and opened for instruction in 1892, and is being developed largelyalong industrial and scientific lines. The Washington Agricultural Experiment Station was organizedMay 1, 1891, under the act of Congress as a department of the Wash-ington Agricultural College and School of Science, with Prof. GeorgeLilley as president of the college and director of the station. Theboard of regents which had been appointed by the governor obtained U. S. Dept. of Age, Bui. 80, Office of Expt Stations. Plate CXLIII.
