These scales have a beam l»l feet long, to one end of whichis attached a pair of arms capable of picking up an entire shock ofmaize or other grain, lifting it free from the ground, and setting itdown again undisturbed. The weighing is done with a pair of steel-yards at the opposite end of the beam. The whole is mounted on awagon. With these scales 10 acres of grain or maize may be weighedin a single day. By so doing all weighings are made under uniformconditions of weather. FINANCIAL SUPPORT. The financial support of the station is derived principally from thenational fund, fees for fertilizer analyses, and sale of farm products.During the last fiscal year it was as follow-: United States appropriation $15, 000. 00 Individuals 356. 53 Fees for fertilizer analyses 195. 00 Farm products 3,148. 95 Miscellaneous 40. 00 Total 18, 740. 48 LINES OF WOR
