rnia substations especially have large col-lections of varieties of fruits. Persian sheep are being bred at all ofthese substations. Large collections of valuable trees and shrubs havebeen made, especially at the forestry substations. (PI. XV, fig. 1,shows the experimental fields of the Foothill substation, and fig. 2 ofthe same plate shows the buildings of the Southern Coast Range sub-station. Date palms grown at the San Joaquin substation are shownin PI. XVI, fig. 1, and an almond orchard at the Southern Californiasubstation in fig. 2. A view of the sequoia grove at the Forestry sub-station is presented in PI. XVII, fig. 1). The four larger substations are maintained at a total expense ofabout $8,000 per annum. The forestrv substations cost at present$1,230 per annum, derived from the general university fund. Themost of the laboratory work for the substations and the compiling ofresults is done at the central station. U. S. Dept. of Agr., Bui. 80, Office of Expt. Stations. Plate XV.
