Headquarters in Paris—told them I belonged to this hospital and ithad moved while I was out walking and that Ihad come down to Paris to find out where itwas. They gave me the new location andmoney enough to go there, which, of course, Iused to get back to my own company whereI was bulletined for court-martial for ffoing-A. W. 0. L. 54 ADVENTURES OF AN And General Pershings great surprise camethe day I got back, too. It was an order forour Division to proceed at once to the Soissonsfront where we had the hardest fighting thatour division had to contend with during thewar.

AMERICAN DOUGHBOY 55 CHAPTER VI. BATTLE OF SOISSONS Our Division was taken by night on July16th in motor busses to a little village nearthe western side of the forest of Villers-Cot-terets. Here we stopped all day of the 17th toreceive extra ammunition and supplies, and notuntil night came, did we get marching ordersthru the forest. We had orders to attack the Huns on theeastern edge of the forest at 4:45 a. m.—on themorning of the 18th. Now that blooming forest was about sevenmiles wide, and intersected everywhere withpaths and roads. It was heavy timber, too.Well, our officers didnt seem to know whatroads we ought to take and we got scatteredall thru that fool wood and mixed up beautifullywith the transports, waiting there for the at-tack. The airplanes couldnt see them in thewoods, you know. And it poured like blazes. The officersworked like mad, trying to find the differentcompanies and battalions and guide them totheir positions.
