nothing, tillfinally it led me to break the law andcommit a misdemeanor—an offense forwhich a young Greek was once throwninto prison here and, unable to pay hisfine or understand the cause of his im-prisonment, killed himself. But I was notthrown into prison. Oh, no! My lunchbasket, being the receiver of the stolengoods, gave no evidence against me andRameses was as guilty and as pleased asI—in fact, had it not been for his winn-ings and eager looks I am sure I neverwould have done it. For hours I sat drinking in the beautyand richness of those wondrous colorsand when I retired that night it was witha feeling of peace, contentment and com-pleteness never felt before. Havingbeen up late, I slept heavily and a vio-lent storm had been raging for some timewhen I was awakened by the creaking ofshutters and flapping of curtains, andarose hastily to close the windows. Ishut the bed-room windows first andstarted into the sitting-room. The doorhad blown shut and, as I opened it toenter, I seemed sucked in, in an instant,as if into a maelstrom, and then as sud-denly stopped. I lost my breath and putout my hands to ward off something com-ing near me—not invisible, certainly, forthe very air seemed pulsing
