Text Appearing Before Image:
nal reputation in civil andmilitary life were guest of this familywhose fortunes have been so closelyallied with the history of Maryland andNew Jersey. The Dickinson ownership of The Hermitage, came to a closeon the first day of April, 1850, whenPhilemon Dickinson II, and his wifeMargaret sold the estate to the late Ed-ward J. C. Atterbury, a member of anold New York family. As it was dur-ing the Dickinson regine, The Hermi-tage when owned by the Atterbnryswas an assemblage place for people ofprovince. After the death of Mr.Atterbury. which occurred in 1887, hisdaughters controlled the property until the 10th of May, 1904, when by deed, the estate passed from the executors ofMr. Atterbury into the possesion ofMajor Harry C. Valentine. Thus, in aperiod of nearly a century and a halfbut four names—Hoops, Dickinson, At-terbury and Valentine, appear in thelist of owners of The Hermitage—arecord which few mansions, equally his-toric, can show in any one of the thir-teen original states.
Text Appearing After Image:
1=>£n> —— Once upon a time Colonel Tom Holmes was called upon to appear at an after dinner talk-fest. He developed a new type of humor, appealing so strongly to the public, that he is nowin demand as a popular speaker, and is talkin* most every night, telling merry tales. Evenhis minutes as Clerk of the Board of Health are so punctured with references to cafe parfait, asparagus vinaigrette and pate de fois gras that the sending out of notices to cut down weedsin back yards are retarded. Notice the turned down glass, the pained expression on Tomsface shows that the carbonated water has just given out.
