At last Georgetown came in sight, and we rapidly ran around the townand proceeded to the celebrated Loop, a plan of which is given below, and acareful study of which is necessary to properly understand the picturesgiven of this most peculiar and unique method of railway construction. The view Fig. 27 shows the upper end of the Loop, and those inFigs. 28 and 29, the general alignment of the railway, and the viaduct at thelower end It may be remarked that to make two miles, 3.9 miles aretravelled, and an elevation of 623 ft. attained; the average grade is lfiO ft,to the mile, and the maximum grade is 190 ft. At the point where the roadruns under itself the viaduct (see Fig. 29) spans the valley; the distancebetween the upper and lower tracks is 75 ft.
