s the largest, being nearly 100 ft. in diameter, andits terraces are in many fantastic forms. It would be useless to attempta detailed description of the wonderful springs, yet each one is slightlydifferent from all the others. In some the colours vary from pale pink todeep rose-colour; while another is as white as snow, its crystal watercovered at the edges with floating flakes like marble. The smell of sulphurfrom the clouds of steam is very perceptible, but not at all disagreeable.If objects are placed in these pools they are heavily coated with whitesoda in a few days. Distant growls of thunder hurried us back to the hotel, which wehad hardly reached when the storm broke. It lasted only a short time, andwhen the sun again burst forth, the high pale terraces gleaming in thelight, and the columns of white steam rising steadily in the windless air,were clear cut against the purple clouds.
