, which is taken from the bottom of the gorge, hisattention is directed to a small object in the upper right-hand corner, whichrepresents the train about to enter the tunnel, the latter being a small blackspot, at first glance seeming to be a spot of ink, while the train might bepassed over as a smear of the printer. At this place there is a beautifulmemorial monument to the late President Garfield. We must now rapidlytransport our traveller to Salida, much as the scenery tempts one to enterupon detailed and illustrated descriptions, and take up the story of theengineers where we. left them at the summit of the Marshall Pass. Theascent had required two engines of the four-coupled consolidated type with20-in. by 22-in. cylinders and 35-in. drivers.
