During the afternoon we passed the alkali plains, which usually causeso much discomfort to travellers from the poisonous dust that arises andpermeates the air and the train, entering at every crack ; but here againwe were most fortunate, for the falling rain had drenched the earth, andthere was no discomfort whatever from the dust. At about 2 p.m. westopped at a little town, and it would be hard to imagine a picture moreutterly dreary and forsaken-looking. A few dirty white houses on verybroad clay streets which had neither grass nor trees, while the level prairiestretched away in all directions, utterly barren of any object.
