of the canon w7alls does not extendthrough its entire length of twenty miles. In thelower portion, the forests have crept well down to thewraters edge. Still, it is every-where an extremelybeautiful and impressive sight. Along the bottom ofthe canon, numerous steam vents can be seen, one ofwhich, it is said, exhibits geyseric action. In places,the canon wralls almost shut out the light of day fromthe extreme bottom. Lieutenant Doane, who madethe dangerous descent several miles below the Falls,records that it was about three oclock p. m., andstars could be distincly seen, so much of the sunlightwas cut off from entering the chasm. The Lower Fall of the Yellowstone must be placedin the front rank of similar phenomnena. It carriesnot one-twentieth the water of Niagara, but Niagarais in no single part so beautiful.
