Range of mountains, many of its sum-mits still capped writh snow. Every-where the darkpine forests come down to the waters edge, in finecontrast with the silver surface of the lake. Thesparkling of the waves, the passage of the cloudshadows, and, in sheltered coves, the tranquil mirrorof the waters, all combine to make the picture one tobe long remembered. The Yellowstone Lake is about 7,741 feet, nearly amile and a half, above the level of the sea. It has ashore line of 100 miles, and an area of 139 squaremiles. Its maximum depth is 300 feet, and its aver-age depth about 30 feet. It is fed almost entirelyfrom the springs and snow drifts of the AbsarokaRange. Its waters are icy cold, clear and transparentto great depths, and literally swarm with trout. It issubject to heavy south-west winds, and at times islashed into tempestuous seas. The lingers have now been generallydropped from the maps and-replaced by the usualnames ; but West Thumb seems to have becomea fixture. Surpassing the Yellowstone Lake both in area andaltitude there are but few lakes in the world. LakeTitticaca, in Peru, and one or two others in the lessexplored regions of the Andes ; and also a few lakeson the lofty tableland of Thibet, comprise the num-ber. The Yellowstone Lake has been a theme of enthu-siastic praise by all who have ever seen it; but whatseems to us the most exquisite tribute it has ever re-ceived is to be found in the farewell words of Mr.Folsom, when, in 1869, he regretfully turned awayfrom its western shore into the deep forests which sur-round it :* As we were about departing on our homewardtrip, we ascended the summit of a neighboring hilland took a final look at Yellowstone Lake.
