Washburn (12 miles) is the most celebratedpeak in the Park, and the first to receive its presentname. Its prominence justifies its notoriety, but thereal cause of it is the fact that for eight years themain tourist route lay across it. From its summit theWashburn party received the first definite confirma-tion of the truth of the rumors that led them intothis region. All reports and magazine articles whichfirst gave a knowledge of the Park to the world werewritten by persons who had crossed this mountain.As the view from its summit is comprehensive andgrand, covering almost the entire Park, it of coursefigured prominently in all narratives. Tourists fellinto the custom established by the first explorers, of * The distances given in this chapter are only approximate, thesurveys for a wagon road from the canon to Mammoth Hot Springs,via Mt. Washburn, not being yet completed.

Many eminent names are to be seenthere. It is a matter for congratulation that the prog-ress upon the road system will soon restore this moun-tain to its former place in the tourist route. Tower Falls (20 miles) is perhaps the most gracefulcataract in the Park, and should never be passed with:out a visit. It is on Tower Creek only a short dis-tance back from the Yellowstone. Lieutenant Doanesays in his report: * Nothing can be more chastely beautiful than thislovely cascade, hidden away in the dim light of over-shadowing rocks and woods, its very voice hushed toa low murmur, unheard at the distance of a few hun-dred yards. Thousands might pass by within a halfmile and not dream of its existence; but once seen,it passes to the list of most pleasant memories.
