[edit]DescriptionThe Wreck of the Dutch East Indiaman Amsterdam at Bulverhythe. 1969. (10265778966).jpg |
The picture shows the earliest stage of the dig, by the civil engineering contractors 'William Press and Sons' who were constructing a sewage outfall nearby. But for the arrival of a team of nautical archaeologists, who got the work properly organised, the contractors would probably have torn the ship to pieces. Having lost her rudder somewhere between Beachy Head and Pevensey Bay and with a severe shortage of man power, due to sickness, the Amsterdam ran aground at Bulverhythe on the 12th. of January 1748.
