The presentdynasty follows the practice of the Chau dynasty by appointing specialofficers to officiate on occasions of ceremony such as offering sacrifices toHeaven, and worshiping spirits. The Buddhists and Taoists have a highpriest set over them who exercises a general supervision over matters relat-ing to religious worship. There is a personage called Tien-sz, Heavenly Teacher, who is chargedwith instructing those who make the management of all spiritual concernstheir profession. He has the power of controlling evil spirits, and does notpractice deception upon the people by making use of the name of false dei-ties. He is a hereditary nobleman of the third class. He is privileged tofollow the doctrines and practices of his own faith, under the direction ofthe Board of Rites.
