n the basis of Israels God-cognition. This being the highest inmans cognition, the solution of all problems upon this basis, ecclesiastical,ethical or in eschatology, must be final in theology, provided the judgmentwhich leads to this solution is not erroneous. An erroneous judgment fromtrue antecedents is possible. In such cases the first safeguard is an appealto reason, and the second, though not secondary, is an appeal to holy writand its best commentaries. Wherever these two authorities agree, reasonand holy writ, that the solution of any problem from the basis of Israels WISE: THEOLOGY OF JUDAISM. 295 God-cognition is correct, certitude is established, the ultimate solution isfound. This is the structure of a systematic theology: Israels God-cognition isthe substratum, the substance; holy writ and the standard of reason are thedesiderata, and the faculty of reason is the apparatus to solve the problemswhich in their unity are the theology of Judaism, higher than which nonecan be.
