The Presi-dent of the United Statesand the Duke of Veragua,the lineal descendant ofColumbus, were the guestsof honor on this occasion.A. parade formed and escortedthese and other distinguishedpersonages to the Fairgrounds, and thence to agrand stand that had beenerected for the purpose tothe east of the Administra-tion Buildinor facinor theGrand Plaza and the Basin.This was throngfed with hiohofficials of this and othernations, and the array ofnotabilities was astonishing.To the east they faced agrand sight. A hundredthousand persons were crowded into the Plaza, eager to see all thatwas to happen. Praise by song, a prayer, and a poem opened theceremonies.
