Day, September28th, when 274,919 entered the en-closure. The time for a few years beforethe opening of the Centennial hadbeen one of great commercial de-pression in this country, and thedate of the opening marked thevery gloomiest of all the time.From that day, however, condi-tions began to improve, and thatday is remembered as the turning-point of the financial crisis. Theresults of the Centennial weremao-nificent, and it will ever be re-membered as one of the greatestevents in the history of this coun-try. As an exposition of theprogress of arts, science and in-dustry it had not before beenequalled in the world. The French republic showedwhat it could do, when, in 1878,was held in Paris another greatexhibition of the works of art andindustry of all nations. It was lessextravagant in expenditure, but inevery respect was equal to thestandard of excellence which hadbeen established. This exposition openedMay I, 1878, and continued until October loth. During- this time^he total attendance was 16,032,725, or an average of 82,650 a day.There was a large deficit in the running of the exposition, but, asbefore, it was believed that the indirect profits to Paris and to allFrance were ereat. Two expositions were held in Australia within a year, and as firstattempts both were considered to be highly satisfactory. One wasat Sydney. It opened September 17, 1879, and closed April 20,
