and the Horticultural Department. Thebeveled lawns which border the Court of Honor, the Basin and theNorth and South Canal are triumphs of conventional art. Leavingthis portion of the grounds, the visitor finds in the sedges, rushesand other semi-aquatic vegetation along the shores of the WoodedIsland and of the mainland along the Lagoon, as great a triumph ofunconventional horticulture. These shores appear as naturally^wild as do any of the marshes of the Illinois prairies, or as they mighthave hundreds of years before the prow of a white mans boat forceda landinor a/nonor diem. In the cabin are many relics of thenoble old hunter and of other heroic pioneers of the westernfrontier. Before it stands one of the old-fashioned emigrantwagons with canvas cover, while the fittings within are in harmonywith Its exterior. But a short distance to the east, and directly opposite from thiscabin, Is the hut of an Australian sv\uatter. It is constructed ofbark, and Is even ruder than the American cabin. In our climateit would be but a poor shelter, and one cannot envy those whohave been compelled to use it as a residence. Within it are seenwhips, saddles, sheepskins, and all manner of utensils, such as arein every day use among the frontiersmen of that country.
