ENTRANCE TO FISHERIES BUILDING. tures. The pillars and arches of the colonnades of the buildingare richly and ingeniously decked with marine forms of endlessvariety, turtles, crabs, lobsters, fish of many kinds ; the effects areinvariably beautiful. The main building is provided with two grandentrances. These are through loggias about 80 feet long, project-ing 41 feet beyond the line of the main building, and flanked ateach corner with lantern-like polygonal towers. Surmounting thequadrangular first story is a great circular story capped with a FISHERIES. 209 conical roof. A graceful open turret crowns this roof, and foursmaller towers surround the base. The double row of engagedcolumns, w^hich form the exterior face of the building, have capitals,

FISH IN THK AQUARIUM. which are formed of yet other varied groupings of manne forms,while the delicate open work of the gallery railings display as manydifferent fishes. The circular story is surrounded by a broadexterior gallery, and the four flanking towers of the entrances and 14 2IO FISHERIES. the four smaller towers of the central roof terminate in openturrets from which delightful views of the grounds are obtained. The roofs are covered with glazedSpanish tile. The east and westpavilions, which are reached bythe curved arcades, are favoriteresorts for the public, especially forthose interested in fishing, eitherfor sport or commercial purposes.The east pavilion is built forexhibiting Hve fish in aquaria.
