Ispopularly called. This building, from its very size, is one of the won-ders of the world. It Is a standing violation of the rule that statis-tics are never Interestlne. Its name is Leviathan. It is the largesthouse that was ever built. It measures within a few feet of seven-teen hundred feet long and eight hundred feet wide. To walkaround It is to journey a mile. To walk once along each side ofeach main aisle and cross aisle, upon the floor and in the galleries, (95) 96 M AN UF ACTURKS. within the structure, Is to travel more than fifty miles. At the rateof one mile an hour, which is as fast as it will be possible to movethrough the throng, taking even the most cursory glance at the ex-hibits, it then requires more than a week, working constantly eighthours a day, to exhaust this building. ERECTION OF MANUFACTURES BUII.DING. Is thirty and one-half acres ; while with its galleries it provides morethan forty-four acres of floor space. The total cost of the buildingwas ^1,700,000. The great roof is the feature of the structure,which makes the strongest impression upon every beholder. Theroof and the trusses that support it are the largest ever built. Thespan is three hundred and eighty feet, and the height to the ridgeof the roof from the floor is two hundred and two feet. Thesenumbers and the statement that the building covers more thanthirty acres give but an indefinite idea of its capacity. It Is esti-mated that five thousand people could live without crowding withi» MANUFACTURES. 9/ the walls of this monster in one thousand cottages, each 25x50feet, which could be built upon the floor.
