Nearly every nation, savageand civilized, is here represented by samples of its leather. Toforeign exhibits the central space on the first floor is assigned. Atone end of this floor Is seen every variety of leather, and at theother every style of Its manufactured product, no matter where orwhen produced. Here are tlie riding-boots of that great warrior,Napoleon, and the elaborate ones of Russias dreaded ruler, Ivan 13^ MANUFACTURES. the Terrible. The second floor contains i8o machines showing theprocesses of manufacturing. Three hundred men are required tooperate these, and they display some very interesting methods. MERCK BUIIvDING. of the Manufactures is contained in the Merck Building. Thisbuilding is situated to the west of the Womans Building, near theentrance to the Midway Plalsance. It is a handsome structure, andcontains a complete exhibit of drugs and finer chemicals, productsof every clime, exhibited by Merck & Co., of New York. Thereare also reading and writing rooms, a reference library and otherpublic comfort service for visitors and customers of the firm. Thus MANUFACTURES. ^2>r it will be seen that the exhibits properly included in the scope ofthis chapter have as great a range of area and distance in thegrounds as they have in character, and in their source. One mightspend months profitably studying what is here shown, without thenexhausting all the benefits which he might derive from the display.
