The most strikingexhibit here is the pavilionerected by Tiffany, the jew-eler, and Gorham, the silver-smith, both of New York.It faces the central space,and thus has to meet forrivals the other three greatnations just named. In itscentral front rises a tall,fluted shaft, with a plain yetnoble base, and a greatDoric capital, surmounted bya globe upon which is poisedat an elevation of 100 feeta golden eagle. On thefront of the base is the sim-ple inscription, Exhibit ofthe U. S. of America. Ateither side of the main en-trance, in the corner, aregroups of columns bearingaloft single tall shafts, ter-minating in globes. Arches,surmounted with carved andsculptured pediments and aroof with low, flattened domecomplete this palatial edifice,which cost its builders $100,-000. Among the more noteworthy pieces exhib* iced is the Globe Clocks an interesting piece of astronomical and chronological mechanism. The globe and casing of the works are of sterling silver; the lower part, containing the. movement, represents a temple of classic form, suggested by theRoman Pantheon; thetwelve pillars encirclingthe temple are symboHcalof the months. Belowthem are marked theRoman numerals, uponwhich a hand indicatesthe time of day. On theroof of the temple, overthe pillars, are the signsof the zodiac and namesof the months. Hereanother hand revolvesindicatinof the calendarmonth.
