ng-coast-ing contests has appeared in France. A steephill is chosen, brakeless wheels are used, andthe rider consuming the greatest amount oftime in descending wins the contest. Re-cently a paper promoted one of these new-fangled downhill events. All contestantswere compelled to ride in a straight line, with-out zigzagging, and of course a competitorputting a foot on the ground was disqualified.The length of the hill was one-quarter of amile, and very steep. There was a large num-ber of competitors, divided into a dozen heats.In one of the heats not a single man suc-ceeded in reaching the bottom of the hill onhis wheel. The successful man allowed the others tocut the pace at the rate of a mile an hour, andat no time did he show any disposition to pushthe field along. The pace told on the leaders,who dropped out, while the winner, by a mag-nificent display of back pedalling, rapidly in-creased the distance that separated him fromthe others.
