56 November 6, BRIEF BITS FOR BUSY MEN. Of the 2,500 members in the New YorkAthletic Club, 1,126 are cyclists. Bids are being invited by the Governmentauthorities in Brazil for the supply of 22,000enamelled plates to be affixed to bicycles in1897. G. B. Schuchardt, of Schuchardt & Schuette,of Berlin, Germany, and H. Greif, chief engi-neer of the concern, are visiting this country.They are among the largest importers in Ger-many of American machinery. Even the carpet mills have caught the bi-cycle craze, and several Massachusetts fac-tories are turning out rugs and carpets thatshow conspicuous designs of yellow and greentandems carrying merry pink youths andpurple maidens. A bill has been introduced in the VermontLegislature to compel railroads to carry bi-cycles as baggage. The bill to tax bicycleowners 75 cents annually, the proceeds goingto provide public cycle paths, has been ad-vanced to third reading.
