yclings universalism? BOTCH REPAIR WORK. If there is any department of machine re-pair work which can be botched readily, it isin the bicycle repair line. It is not only theinexperienced workman that sometimesmakes a bad job when repairing, but oldhands get careless; or, when in a hurry, putthings together quite shiftlessly. Take the adjustment of a valve, for exam-ple. Noi long ago ago a cycle repair com-pany got itself into trouble through the care-lessness or incompetency of one of its work-men. A rider stopped at the shop to have hishandle-bar adjusted. A clamp like the onepresented in Pig. 3 was on the machine. Thebungling repair hand put in a washer, D, asshown. The washer, of course, prevented the clampfrom closing up as tightly on the upright baras it should. Consequently, when the riderwas going down grade the clamp slipped, allowing the handle-bars to loosen, and thefront wheel turned sideways abruptly, throw-ing the rider and injuring him. The com-pany had to pay damages. Another case in which botch repair workfigured is exemplified in Pig. 4, in which atoo-short pedal-bar stud was used, as indi-cated at E. The nut only reached a coupleof threads, and these gave way under thepressure of the riders f
