Major Taylor, the black-hued Mungermascot, was humorously picked out by thecrowd. He pedalled along quietly, and wouldhave attracted no attention had it not beenfor his mahogany tint. Rice, a Wilkesbarrerider, made a fine showing. He is of stocky tronized. The inner ring was fairly well-crowded, for this year a 50-cent admissionwill entitle you to walk all over the Garden,and this privilege is treasured by many, es-pecially those who enjoyed it during the oldsix-day go-as-you-please contests. The bandplayed and the crowd waited. In fact, itseemed remarkable that fully 5,000 peopleshould wait till midnight to see such an eventstarted. Bald also made some at-tempts at record, doing one mile in 2:09 4-5,and a second mile during the evening, pacedby a tandem, in 2:08 1-5. The race is being managed by P. T. Powers,of the New York Baseball Club, and JamesKennedy, well known as a manager of boxingtournaments. Both men well know how tocater to the New York sporting public. Theyhave the entire New-York press with them,Mr. Kennedy being an old press man, and,judging from the public interest in the raceand the great public interest in cycling, it isprobable that the race will be an emphaticsuccess.
