Summary
[edit]DescriptionThe Waverley, or Abbot class locomotive “Rob Roy”.jpg |
English: The Waverley, or Abbot class was the only 4-4-0 tender engine to run on the Broad Gauge.
Ten engines, built in 1855 by Robert Stephenson & Co. They must have looked resplendent with their full length polished brass running plates. Here we see Locomotive "Rob Roy", which, in November 1868, was involved in the tragic Bullo Pill accident. The loco was hauling a mail train from New Milford when it collided at speed with a stalled cattle train from Carmarthen. Sadly, the rear van of the cattle train contained several men (playing cards, apparently). Four were killed, along with many of the cattle. "Rob Roy" survived, however, and ran for another four years. |
