Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On September 23, 2021, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of a small section of Western Europe. Parts of two countries are captured in this image: France to the west and Germany in the east. The Rhine River forms the border between the countries in this region. On either side of the Rhine River Valley, a pair of geologically matching mountain ranges appear in dark green. The Vosges Mountains, with their rounded peaks, alpine meadows, and widespread forests sits in France while the Black Forest—described as “deep, dark, and delicious”—resides in Germany. The Rhine River Valley in that area is known to geologists as the Rhine Graben. A graben is an elongated block of Earth’s crust that has sunk relative to the surrounding blocks.
