Description

In his Footprint East Africa Handbook, 7th Edition, Michael Hodd identifies the building housing these paintings as an "Iqa-bet, a two-story stone storage building, which contains religious artifacts." The building is next to the Church of Abba Afse, Yeha, Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia.

This piece caught my eye because it is so unlike the Ethiopian Christian Orthodox religious art I had seen so far on the trip.

Heathen than I am, I don't know whether this style of iconography belongs to an Eastern Orthodox tradition or a Latin one.

And while the image is obviously being venerated in Ethiopia, since that is where it is located, I see little (OK, nothing) about it that suggests it belongs to the Ethiopian Christian Orthodox artistic tradition.

I am inclined to think it is Orthodox for the same reason I would be surprised to find art displaying elements of Eastern Orthodox iconography in a Latin church.

What I wonder is whether the piece was imported into Ethiopia from elsewhere in the Eastern Orthodox world, or painted in Ethiopia by an artist schooled in a different Orthodox tradition. Or, does it represent an Ethiopian artistic style with which I am simply unfamiliar?

Perhaps a better informed viewer will be able to shed light on this matter.

In any case, it is a lovely and dignified piece, whatever its medium (could it be a print?) or background.
