Description
English: The "Victory" Flag Ship, Portsmouth Harbour 1883 after an original of c.1862

Photograph of the starboard side of HMS Victory, not in sail, on the water in Portsmouth Harbour. Two flags fly from the ship. In the background is the city of Portsmouth. Wilson made a series of photographs of warships that were taken in Plymouth in 1861 and Portsmouth in 1862. This photograph is from the latter series and shows HMS Victory.
This photograph is a later carbon copy which is a process that is less susceptible to light damage, unlike the original albumen photograph which was prone to fading over time.

Provenance: From an album of photographs collected and arranged by Albert, Prince Consort between 1860 and 1861, Victoria continued the collection after his death.
