In recent years we have had someremarkable shore strandings of schoolsof whales in the north coast of Tas-mania, on the Gipsland coast, as wellas on the South Australian shoreswhere the conditions were hardlyfavourable for their preservation.Some such happening as this verylikely took place in our older seas inthe neighbourhood of where Beau-maris now stands judging by the verylarge number of whale remains thathave already been discovered at thislocality. Numerous remains of theinvertebrate division of the AnimalKingdom are also present in directassociation with the above, notablymollusca or shellfish and corals. (Themodern view of this deposit is that itis a lag deposit formed as a resultof erosion of the underlying sedimentsleaving behind a concentrate of whale January/February 17

A little higher up in the beds mol-lusca become much more abundantand definite layers of different shellssuch as Placunanomia, Cuciillaea,Eucrassatella, Chione and Mactrashow in a striking manner. Placuna-nomia is a thin pearly translucentshell not unlike some oyster shells andit occurs in and above the concretionbed. CucuUaea is one of the boxshells and occurs in patches and localbeds. Then the Eucrassatella band isvery pronounced but few of the shells are well preserved. This bed shows avery pronounced roll in this section; itis first to be noted at sea-level somedistance west of the hotel, below thehotel it is several feet above sea level,while at the east end of BeaumarisBay it again descends to sea-level. Asa rule the Chione-Mactra bed is alittle higher in the section. Thesemolluscan remains on account of theporous, sandy character of the bedshave been for the most part convertedinto soft, chalky material and thegreatest car
