At dusk, there was a disturbance in thebird world with strange and alien soundsamong familiar voices. I hurried downto the creek along a little cattle track(with one eye on the ground in case ofnight wandering snakes), and just abovethe tops of the tall red gums on theflat, a big black bird outlined againstthe sky, was flying in a roughly circularcourse returning always to one point.Darkness was falling rapidly, but as Icame directly underneath I saw thelarge white coin spots of the Dollar Bird.High up the trunk of the tree was oneof those huge curls that sometimes oc-cur on certain gums. From the centreof it a limb had rotted out, leaving adark hole. Regularly, on every circuit,the Dollar Bird paused at this hole and 292 Vict.
