Rabbits None of us had ever seen suchenormous numbers of rabbits any-where as were on Lady Julia PercyIsland in December 1967; they wereliving amongst the rocks around thesouthern and western sides of theisland, and amongst the bracken andpigface. There was an absolute swarm-ing horde over the pigface in par-ticular, for this was practically theonly available food. Many were using Muttonbird bur-rows as temporary retreats, and thisin itself is creating a serious problem:for by enlarging burrow entrances,they are increasing the possibility oferosion, and already many acres ofthe islands surface have becomedust-bowls. Perhaps the most amazing featureof our trip however, was to see somany half-grown rabbits dying ofstarvation. Despite the problem whichthe rabbits are creating, it was atragic sight to see these animals tooweak to run from beneath our feet.On one occasion, one moved slowlyfrom under my feet into a shallow 125

Otherstried to run, but were unable to maketheir hind legs function properly. Everywhere were dead rabbits—yetwe estimated that there must havebeen scores of thousands on the islandstill alive. There was no evidence of myxoma-tosis amongst these animals, as therehad been in better years. Mosquitolarvae were seen in rock pools belowThunder Point, but none were collec-ted, as a rising south west wind madeit impossible to climb down the cliffface which was drenched with spray.
